Potential cognitive benefits

Musical study gives students practice with focused attention, listening, sequencing, pattern recognition and coordinated movement. Researchers have examined how these experiences relate to cognitive development, but findings vary, and it would be misleading to promise that piano lessons automatically raise IQ or school grades.

Emotional and social growth

Working toward a song or performance can give students opportunities for creative expression, perseverance, self-confidence and connection with others. Individual experiences depend on the student, their environment, and the opportunities available.
